Incredible Heating Efficiency Paired with Year-Round Comfort

That about sums it up, and that is enough to pique most folks’ interest. We’re not going to leave you in the dark, though, so let’s consider the way in which hybrid heating works. As the word “hybrid” would lead you to believe, it’s something of a mashup in terms of HVAC systems.

Basically, a hybrid heating system combines an air-source heat pump with a gas furnace. The gas furnace is, of course, one of the most revered of all home heating systems. Natural gas is a largely domestic product, so its pricing tends to be much less volatile than that of fuels like oil. Plus, they allow for effective and largely efficient heating.

Because our winters are relatively mild, however, many homeowners really want to take advantage of that in order to maximize savings. That is where the heat pump comes in. You see, a heat pump does not burn fuel or use electric resistance to generate heat. Instead, it uses a refrigerant cycle and the heat transfer principle in order to use existing heat from the air outside in order to heat homes with great efficiency.

When temperatures really drop, however, the heat pump can lose some efficiency. In some cases, the gas furnace is more efficient for spans of time. A hybrid heating system automatically switches back and forth between the heat pump and the furnace as necessary. It is always heating your home in the most efficient manner possible, with no input required on your end.

Wary of investing in two systems, nonetheless? Well, here’s the real kicker. Heat pumps can reverse their operation. That means that you can use it to cool your home, as well.  So you get very efficient and very reliable heating, along with whole-house cooling, when you choose to use a hybrid heating system in your home. Sounds like a good deal, right? It may not be for everyone, but if you think it’s for you,  just give us a call.
