Why Does My Furnace Keep Shutting On and Off?

As popular as the furnace is, you may think that this type of heating system is perfect. As we know, though, here in the real world nothing is truly perfect. Even as great a heating system as the furnace can run into operational problems from time to time.

A furnace that keeps shutting on and off is one of the most common issues that homeowners may encounter with their furnaces. There are quite a few reasons as to why this may happen. It may not be terribly serious, actually, but you should always schedule prompt service to protect your furnace in Holly Springs, NC.

It’s Called Short Cycling

The problem described above actually has a name: short cycling. When your furnace is heating your home properly, it is doing so in full heating cycles. Short cycling occurs when a problem of some kind interrupts this heating cycle. As with most heating problems, there are a few problems that could result in this issue.

For the most part, the causes tend to be fairly benign. A malfunctioning thermostat could cause the system to cycle off prematurely. Perhaps you have a very dirty air filter that is causing the system to overheat due to a high level of airflow resistance. It’s even possible that a faulty thermocouple is shutting the system down in an effort to protect your safety.

Now, these aren’t terribly serious issues. However, if your short cycling is not a new development, the news may not be quite as good. If your heater has always short cycled, it’s very possible that the heater is actually too big for your home. It is heating it up to fast, cycling off and on, and resulting in wasted energy and excessive strain on the system. Don’t ignore the problem, but do know that a replacement may be your only option in this case.
